G.O.T. Programs
Students are accountable to complete applications, attend
interviews, read assigned literature, maintain a journal,
actively participate in study sessions, and proudly represent
their schools, communities, and families. Global Orienteering & Training
(GOT) Programs uses real-life experience to inspire educational
development. Participants practice skills from each of the
workshops listed below (for more information on each workshop,
please click on the respective links).
Civically Engaged Activity: We
use "The Civically Engaged Reader: A diverse Collection of
Short Provocative Readings on Civic Activity," Edited by
Adam Davis and Elizabeth Lynn, and published by The Great Books
Foundation, to launch our intellectual and hands-on immersion
into civic life. The nature and depth of civic activity ranges
within G.O.T. Programs from visiting shelters to replanting
rainforests, but always includes provocative readings and
discussions.
Interview Training – Practiced
during the application phase:
Interviewing is a fact of life. Applicants benefit from a
built-in educational process. Whether or not an applicant
becomes a participant, s/he will experience a one-on-one
interview, receive a written evaluation as a candidate and
a debrief of the interview and their response to critique,
and suggestions about how to improve interviews for the future.
ISW (Ideal Student Workshop): Students
become life-long scholars when they are inspired by reality.
Inspiration, however, is only the first step. Students learn
how to do a self-assessment; to apply organization and time
management techniques; to orient oneself as a student; how
to annotate and take notes; how to be critically literate:
to read, think, and process write; to write creatively and
reflectively; and to peer critique.
Leadership Program – Taught
during a pre-excursion workshop and throughout the adventure:
Leadership is an overused word and under-practiced skill.
Every participant rotates through the role of group leader
and focuses on the Leadership Model – BE-KNOW-DO; The
Active Team Member; Goal Setting; Planning; Problem Solving;
Personality Types; Influencing & Motivating; and Leadership
Styles.
Urban Orienteering: One of the most valuable
skill-sets that youth can develop is the ability to safely
maneuver in any city in the world. Urban Orienteering teaches
the following: Safe and Smart Travel Practices; Changing
Currency; Using Maps; Public Transportation; Communication
in a foreign environment; Locating and Securing Lodging;
Budgeting, and much more.
